Staying in Ubud doesn’t mean you have to choose between rice terraces and scuba diving.

Ubud is inland, so there are no scuba dive sites in Ubud itself. Bali’s diving is around the coast and neighboring islands. The good news is that several of these areas can still be reached on a day trip, so you can keep your accommodation in Ubud and spend a day underwater.

The main thing to consider is where you want to dive. Padang Bai, Tulamben, Amed and Nusa Penida offer very different experiences, and your choice also affects how much travelling is involved.

For something completely different, head east to Tulamben.

The main attraction is the USAT Liberty shipwreck, but the area offers more than the wreck itself. The shore-diving setup also makes Tulamben very different from a boat-diving day.

It involves more time on the road from Ubud, so think of this as a proper full-day trip rather than a quick excursion.

Padang Bai

If you’re new to diving or simply want a relaxed day underwater, Padang Bai is worth considering.

It has several dive sites rather than one single attraction, which gives the dive team some flexibility when choosing sites according to conditions and diver experience.

It is also one of the areas we use for beginner diving and training.

Nusa Penida

If manta rays are high on your Bali list, Nusa Penida will probably get your attention.

This trip involves both road and boat logistics, and conditions around Penida can be more demanding than at some of Bali’s easier dive areas. The exact dive sites should therefore be selected according to conditions and diver experience rather than promising one fixed itinerary.

For certified divers comfortable with the conditions, it can be one of the highlights of diving in Bali.

Actual timing can vary depending on your accommodation, dive site, sea conditions and Bali traffic.

Padang Bai is one of the closest major dive areas to Ubud, usually around 1–1.5 hours by car depending on your accommodation and traffic. It offers several dive sites suitable for beginners and certified divers. Tulamben and Amed are farther east and generally require a longer drive, while Nusa Penida also involves a road transfer followed by a boat journey.
